Okatsune, based in Hiroshima, are one of the largest and most respected makers of garden tools in Japan, combining modern production techniques with traditional style and quality.
Sentei
Their secateurs are the no. 1 choice for professionals; they're simple, sharp and strong. Unlike other brands, which rely on cushioning for a smooth cut, these have a more powerful, direct action. (As well as making a very satisfying noise.)
£40
Hak
These topiary clippers, from Wakasaya, were our best seller last year. Customers found them ideal for box clipping, with the 5" blades and spring action. The Japanese name means leaf cutters: it's important not to cut old, hard wood.
£35
Karikomi-Basami (shears)
The long blades (8") and short handles (13") of these shears from Okatsune provide perfect balance for detailed topiary work, whilst being tough enough for hedge pruning. Ideal for cloud pruning and box clipping.
£65
Ladders
These aluminium ladders are used all over Japan by gardeners and nurserymen. The wide base, deep steps and extending third leg, as well as clawed feet and flat top make them incredibly safe and easy to use. They're particularly useful on rough or sloping ground, where the third leg can be adjusted to compensate for level change.Manouevering the ladder in crowded borders, the third leg, joined only at the top, can be placed around, over and even in plants, doing far less damage than ordinary step ladders.
Useful for all garden jobs, decorating, changing lightbulbs, cleaning gutters etc, tripod ladders really come into their own when dealing with large topiary and hedges. Their adaptability, stability and comfort allow one to spend all the time necessary to do jobs properly, without rushing.
